Men, let's face facts. Being bald isn't something that most of us want. Being bald with a beard, however, is something we can all get behind. Going bald with a beard offers a number of different possibilities that our haired friends can't quite pull off or make work.
I see a lot of men who go bald and try desperately to cover it up. They try toupees which look bad, spend thousands on hair plugs, or do the awful comb-over look, let’s face it, no one should ever do.
Embracing our baldness as we grow older is an important part of maturity. Accepting this natural progression speaks to our security, comfort, and confidence as men. These qualities are not only healthy for us to nurture, they’re also pretty attractive to the opposite sex.
Why Go Bald with a Beard
There are a number of reasons why going bald with a beard is the best way to go bald. According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of thirty-five, 2/3 of men will experience hair loss to some degree. By the age of fifty, 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair.
1. Be Trendy
Bald with a beard is in. Haven’t you heard? From Shark Tank’s Daymond John to Jason Statham, many of the biggest stars of tv and film have adopted the look either as a permanent look, for a role, or to try out a new style.
Among the celebs who have rocked the look which you could even be for Halloween:
- Bruce Willis
- Patrick Stuart
- Idris Elba
- Brad Pitt
2. Achieve Balance
When you start losing the hair on your head, panic can set in. There’s no need for this as it is simply a part of life. The good news is that baldness is often linked to high testosterone which also contributes to facial hair growth.
It may be nature's trick but going bald up top usually, means you'll be able to grow a full beard. Even if you haven’t been able to achieve a full bearded look in the past, you may now be able to pull it off. According to this article by Business Insider, going bald with a beard helps balance out your face since the beard adds a level of contrast as well as symmetry to your face.
3. Your Beard Stands Out
Now that you’ve gone bald up top, going bald with a beard helps you make your facial hair a focal point rather than an afterthought. Since your beard is now the sole point of contrast to the rest of your face, your beard is accentuated, allowing for more styling and grooming possibilities.
In an article by Business Insider, they encourage bald men to experiment with a variety of beard styles, from light stubble to a goatee, to a full-on mane. Whatever you choose, your beard is now front and center on your mug, so treat it well and be adventurous.
4. Women Really Love It
While we may not think of going bald as the world's best "chick magnet," going bald with a beard can actually improve our stock. Women like men who are confident enough to be comfortable in their own skin and part of that is accepting baldness as a natural part of life.
According to a HuffPost Style article, men are starting to use their facial hair to play up strengths and downplay weaknesses, such as baldness. In a separate article, it’s explained how science shows that from thick stubble to full beard, facial hair makes us hotter. With science backing it up, it’s no wonder that many of the Hollywood studs are going with the bearded look.
5. Save Time and Money
Shaving your head may be a lengthy process the first time you do it. Once shaved, it becomes a routine of regular maintenance that you can easily do yourself without needing to go to the barber or stylist. Since you’re already grooming your beard, you can use many of the same razors and creams for your dome.
Beyond that, compare the cost of shaving your head with attempting to regrow your hair through expensive products such as Rogaine, or the surgical route of hair plugs. A few bucks a month for some shaving cream doesn’t sound so bad, does it?
In an article by USA News, the average cost of a men's haircut is $28 nationwide. If you get your hair cut once a month that's $336 a year you're saving. Twice a month? $672 a year. Depending on where you live, that’s an extra car payment, rent, or a two-year Netflix subscription at your fingertips.
6. It looks Masculine and Dominant
Not only do you look totally badass, but being bald with a beard conveys dominance. According to a study by the University of Pennsylvania, men with shaved or bald heads were consistently rated as being more dominant in appearance and demeanor.
According to the study, which was summarized in Business Insider, the designer of the experiment, researcher Albert Mannes was inspired to do the research after he shaved his head. The result? He found more people in his work and personal life deferring to him as a result.
This might explain why many successful CEO’s such as Jeff Bezos (Amazon), and Jeffrey Katzenberg (Dreamworks) have adopted the look. Entrepreneur Seth Godin, who has rocked the polished look for years, says “it starts the conversation that you’ve done something active” which may have a lot to do with the perception.
7. Your Options Are Limited
Lets face it. You can either be bald with a beard or bald without a beard. Looking at it like this it's an obvious choice.
If you're able to grow the facial hair, then grow it! Our opinion is it's the best way to go. If you're unable to grow facial hair, well that's alright and you'll have to deal with the cards genetics handed you.
If you were the gentleman above you see that it's not the end of the world if you can't grow a beard. However here at iManscape we prefer the bald with beard!
8. Because Women Don’t Like Toupees
To combat the effects of premature or natural hair loss, many men try to go the toupee route. Turns out, guys, most women don’t like them! Scouring the internet on various message boards such as Yahoo Answers and male hair growth support forums, we plucked a few key phrases that make up the general thoughts we encountered.
Most women we encountered didn’t like the idea of a toupee for two main reasons:
- The belief it signals a lack of confidence or insecurity.
- They flat out think it looks dumb.
Sorry guys, that's the word on the street. And not only do women, not like them but as you can see from the last screen shot, many women actually prefer the bald look. It’s all about being confident and comfortable with who you are.
9. Look Wise Beyond Your Years
There is a time-honored tradition of bald men with magnificent beards being perceived as being smarter and wiser. There’s also studies that show how sporting a beard increase the perception that the wearer is more trustworthy.
You don’t have to be Confucius, of course, and no one expects you to be. However, you can easily pull off the wise man look by sporting a magnificent beard to go with your polished head.
