So you're looking for a Philips Norelco shaver 5200 review. There's been quite the mix of reviews about the Norelco 5200. From a distance it appears to be another great Philips rotary shaver but there's some quirks you should know about.
Rotary shavers are great at cutting through thick facial hair. They're typically quieter than a foil shaver and arguably more comfortable. However, allow me to break down this specific model in detail and don't buy anything until you read this.
Warning: The Philips Norelco 5200 has motor and shaving issues that have been reported by multiple customers of this product.
Instead I would recommend getting the Philips Norelco 5500 on Amazon instead. It's a much more solid product overall and the upgraded version to the 5200. It's a far superior rotary shaver.
Consider This Before You Buy
Make sure you're suitable for a rotary shaver. Not everyone meets the requirements and if you're one of them you want to use a foil shaver instead. Rotary shavers excel at cutting facial hair that is thicker, curly, and has a circular growth pattern.
You should meet at least 2 of the requirements before using a rotary shaver. If your facial hair is more of the opposite than what I've described you may want to consider this foil shaver instead.
Foil shavers work better for people with thinner hairs, straight hairs, and a straighter growth pattern. You'll often see reviews from people saying an electric shaver didn't work very well and more times than not they should have used the other type of shaver.
Another thing to consider with electric shavers is their ability to wet shave. It's nice to change things up time to time and go from a dry shave to taking your time with a wet shave. Electric shavers can work with normal shaving cream but you should consider an electric shave gel above all.
Electric shave gel is designed to work better with electric shavers. It typically applies thinner and assists the shaver gliding across the skin. It'll help the shaver lift hairs and give you a closer shave. It's a nice experience and unique compared to using your safety razor.
Philips Norelco 5200
This is the Philips Norelco 5200 that we're reviewing. It's a cordless rotary shaver with a simple design. This series features a 5 directional flex head which is now an older technology for Philips as they've upgraded to a 8 directional head.
It does have the convenient smart click feature. You're able to detach the head and replace it with other attachments. Typically it comes with a detail trimmer attachment that's good for trimming your sideburns or lining up a mustache.
I really enjoy the smart click feature on other Philips shavers. One of the other attachments Philips includes in some other purchases is the scrub brush. Since you should be exfoliating before shaving it's an excellent attachment. Without it a lot of us would forget to exfoliate!
On the up side the Philips Norelco 5200 is capable of wet shaving and is a good travel shaver. The body of this shaver is a bit more compact than some others. It doesn't have a ton of attachments but it does come with a travel pouch and the ability to set to travel lock.
Ideally if you're able to pick up a shaver for home and for outside the home this would make a decent option if it didn't have the issues it does (see below). I think it's a great idea to keep a shaver for your travel bag or if you frequent one spot enough to keep one away from home.
It just makes traveling or moving around so much easier when there are less things to think about. At least you won't have to worry over leaving your shaver at home.
Warning: I would usually recommend you read further into detail about this shavers features and abilities below in this Philips Norelco Shaver 5200 review. However, this shaver does not warrant a full detailed review. I can't recommend you buy this shaver because of its weak motor and shaving function.
Taking a moment to view what real customers have said about their experience with this shaver should be enough to turn anyone away from making this purchase.
Instead get the updated model at roughly the same price: Philips Norelco 5500.
If you're still curious of the features of the 5200 the review continues below...
Features of the Norelco 5200
There are four core features that make up the Philips Norelco 5200.
Precision Blade System
The precision blade system is apart of the 5 directional heads. Each of the three shave heads is capable of moving in five different directions to contour with your face as you shave. This helps the shaver give you a closer shave faster.
Philips has since upgraded to a 8 directional shave head but you'll only see it on the newest models.
Smart Click System
I really enjoy Philips smart click system. This allows you to quickly and easily exchange the head of the shaver for other attachments. It only takes a second to pop on a detail trimmer or facial scrub attachment.
Without the smart click system I would forget to exfoliate most times before shaving. Since it's in the form of an attachment I always remember to use it.
A fancy way of saying you can wet shave with this shaver. I talked a little earlier about wet shaving with electric shavers. I think it's a great feature to be able to wet shave. It's one of those things you don't realize you like until you don't have it.
When wet shaving with the Philips Norelco 5200 make sure to use an electric shave gel. These electric shave gels or talc etc.. are designed for electric shavers and assist it while shaving. Normal shaving cream can just get in the way.
Super Lift & Cut
The blade heads are designed in a way that lifts your hair up before cutting. This helps give you a closer smoother shave. This technology has been perfected in the newest models of Philips and they're able to shave even a single days growth of stubble.
This is where you begin to notice all the negative things about this shaver. It isn't until it got into the hands of real consumers that we were able to pull out the cold hard truth. The cold hard truth of our Philips Norelco Shaver 5200 review is that this shaver stinks!
People are comparing cheap disposable razors to having better quality. While this may be an exaggeration it still stinks. The main issue lies with this shavers motor power. Most people that have used it experience a very weak cut that has taken them ages to get the job done.
Face it no one has time for a two hour shave. No electric shaver should take a long time to shave. The whole idea behind an electric shaver is convenience and quick shaves. The Philips Norelco 5200 missed the mark entirely.
After reading about the Philips Norelco 5200 you know there's a need for some decent alternative options. Above are our three most recommended options for alternative rotary shavers. None of which have any issues compared to the Norelco 5200.
Philips Norelco 5500 - This is our first recommendation and the one I've chosen to link to in the red warning boxes above. Mostly because it's very similar to what you were initially looking for in the Norelco 5200.
The Norelco 5500 got everything right that the 5200 got wrong. It's got a powerful motor that will cut your beard very easily and it has some additional features. Including the nice detail trimmer attachment you can use with the smart click system.
Philips Norelco 9300 - If you want to take everything up a notch you should get the Norelco 9300. This is my favorite Philips rotary shaver because it has all the right features. It comes with a cleaning station that will clean and charge your shaver. It's the ultimate way to be maintenance free with electric shavers.
The Norelco 9300 also comes with a handy multiple speed setting. Allowing you to change between three speed options of sensitive, normal, or fast. Because not every day is the same when you need to shave. Some days your skin may be sensitive and the 9300 has a speed option to match it.
Philips Norelco 4500 - The 4500 is a mixture of affordability and low maintenance features. It's a flat top rotary shaver which also makes it very quiet when shaving and even more quiet if you're using shaving gel.
The push button flip top makes it super easy to clean. With a push of a button and rinsing under the sink you'll have a clean electric shaver after every shave. It's a great middle ground option that many men enjoy.
Before You Go!
I hope I was able to help you avoid that shaver with this Philips Norelco Shaver 5200 review. It's not very often you come across a total failure like this but I suppose it's bound to happen. I'm sure not every 5200 has this problem because Philips likely made an attempt to fix them but at this point I rather not even try.
Instead just get the Philips Norelco 5500 and you can be sure they've fixed any issues and have made additional upgrades to the product.
